Nutritional Counseling

Feeling overwhelmed by all the mixed messages out there about food? Frustrated and just wanting to figure out what works for you? I know how you feel. It seems for every piece of nutritional advice there’s someone who will argue the opposite. Who to believe?

Remember: every person’s body is unique. What works for you might not work for your partner, or your sibling, or your best friend. Each of us has different biochemistry that determines how our body uses food, what foods we like, and what foods don’t agree with us at all. What’s more, you could be eating the most appropriate diet for you, but if you’re not digesting it properly, then you’re not getting what you need from it.

Ultimately, our bodies are communicating with us all the time, and our job is to listen, to identify what they’re asking for, and to respond appropriately. If this sounds like stepping into foreign territory, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m here to help.

I work with people who are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired – be that chronic headaches, digestive upset, low energy levels, extra pounds that just don’t want to budge, or just generally not feeling good in your body. Together we’ll unravel the complexity around food, listen to your body’s signals, and give it what it needs to heal itself, shed those unwanted pounds, and truly thrive.

And we all know food isn’t just about energy and nutrients – when we’re standing in front of the open freezer, gorging down on ice cream straight from the tub at 3am, it’s not about the food. We’ll create a safe space to explore what’s really going on underneath these behaviors and habits that are sabotaging your health.

I provide in-depth one-on-one health and nutritional counseling in 3- and 6-month packages. We’ll meet by phone or by Skype twice a month. I’ll customize a program for you that will take you from where you are now to bringing your health goals to life. I come equipped with loads of resources, handouts, great recipes, cooking tips, and a real, passionate desire to see you succeed in making the change you want in your life. We’ll troubleshoot and course-correct along the way, finding the strategies and habits that really work for you in the context of your life.

Special Program: Sugar Detox

Feeling all sugared out? A little extra around the midline hanging on as evidence of festivities and a party well enjoyed? As you know if you’ve been around this site at all, I’m a big believer in keeping it real. I don’t believe in deprivation and I think holidays are cause for celebration. (see my Surviving the Holidays post for full details on my holiday attitude)

But. That doesn’t mean going whole hog all the time. Indulgence is ideally the exception not the rule. So, if indulgence has been your norm or you’re coming off a particularly festive season, it’s time for a little house-cleaning.

Like a chiropractic adjustment for your blood sugar handling, this two-week (14 day) sugar detox will reset your system, initiate weight loss, and eliminate those sugar cravings once and for all. It’s a perfect way to launch a renewed commitment to health and well-being.

Over a 4-week period, we’ll get you all set up for the cleanse, send you meal plans, recipes, grocery guidelines, and pep talk emails, and then reintegrate you back into a more normal and sustainable way of eating.

Cost is $250. Email me for more info.

My approach

As a nutritional therapy practitioner (NTP) and holistic health counselor (HHC), I work with several basic premises:

  • Margaret with garden goodiesEating should be a fun, pleasurable experience, and above all, what you eat should be tasty. Tasty doesn’t have to mean it’s bad for you; tasty can be healthy and nutritious. Let’s re-define tasty together. Eating naked is most definitely tasty.
  • Eating is about nourishment, not deprivation. How you eat should be the same, even when you’re shedding pounds or addressing a health concernâ; in fact, especially in these instances. Eating naked is extremely nourishing.
  • We are what we eat, so let’s choose wisely, keeping it simple and going back to the basics.
  • We are also more than what we eat. We are whole people -  nourished by much more than just the food we put in our mouths. Together we’ll look at the bigger context of your life – your “primary foods” – those things that nourish you apart from food, such as your relationships, career, physical activity and spirituality. We’ll explore how these primary foods influence choices you’re making around what you choose to eat.
  • Every one of us is unique, so no one diet works for everyone. We’ll customize a naked diet that works for you specifically, and develop a food plan around your body’s bio-individuality.
